Are all cassettes equal? No, they aren’t at all. They are different because of their design, but mainly because of their chemical composition and, thus, their magnetic and sonic performance. There are four types of tape regarding their composition: I (normal or ferric), II (chrome), III (ferrichrome) and IV (metal).

(in our case a ten-speed) The two teeth counts tell you which cassette you'll need. In our case it would be an cassette. Don't forget to check the front chainrings for wear. Excessive wear makes them look like shark-teeth. Also you'll need tools to remove the cassette, a chain-whip and a brand specific lockring tool, as well as a chaintool.

You cannot replace a 9-speed cassette with a speed as the greater number of gears requires a different width chain. It’s also worth noting that while cassettes from two of the three major manufacturers (Shimano and SRAM) are interchangeable, cassettes from Italian maker Campagnolo are specific to Campagnolo drivetrains.

Nov 16,  · The cassette hub uses a “freehub” sytem, which is a type of clutch mounted to the body of the hub. This cylindrical mechanism ratchets counter-clockwise for coasting, and locks clockwise for driving the bike when pedaled. The freehub body has a series of splines on the outer shell. “Cassette” sprockets slide over these splines.

As of , fatbikes and disk brakes have led to a several new standards. The problem of disk brakes' pulling the hub out of the front dropouts (see James Annan's article) has been addressed with through axles, which insert into a fork with a hole rather than a slot at the end of each nvenogrerenofe.teatchebutsawbcatilismvidibalbestdisf.co see our article about disc brakes for information on disc-brake issues.
